From the Inside Out:

The Psychology of Matriarchal Community

A workbook for when you're done waiting for the world to change.

You already know something is wrong. You've felt it for years.

This workbook is for what comes next.

The actual practice of building something better, starting from exactly where you are.

What this is

From the Inside Out: The Psychology of Matriarchal Community is a working guide to the personal and relational skills that matriarchal communities require: deconstructing old patriarchal conditioning, inner resilience, radical empathy, conscious communication, conflict repair in community, non-hierarchical leadership, gift economy, and reclaiming creativity and the sacred.

Each module gives you the research (kept brief), a set of reflection prompts and short exercises, and a Matriarchy in Practice: one small, real act of building community, with your people, at your pace.

What this isn't

It isn't therapy, and it won't fix a crisis. It's educational, not clinical. If you're in the thick of something, please get proper support first.

It won't ask you to give more than you're already giving. If you're someone who's spent a lifetime being the one who gives to everyone else first, this asks the opposite. Several exercises are about receiving, resting, and boundaries, not doing more.

It also isn't a quick fix. Deconstructing patriarchal-capitalist conditioning is the work of years, not an eight-module programme. However, the benefits of this work will start immediately: the first honest conversation and the first boundary held will change your life the day they happen.

Who it's for

Matriarchies are gender egalitarian, and this work is for individuals of all genders, but it will feel different depending on your starting point. There are activities on how to give more and how to step back.

If you've been wanting to become the kind of person who could build something new, who wants to play their part in becoming the type of leader our new world needs, this is the practical start.

If you don't use the word matriarchy, but you still care about reciprocity, shared power, and a system that lets people thrive, then this workbook is for you. The skills inside are the human, relational foundations underneath all egalitarian movements.

About the author

Dr Kirsty Lee is a psychological scientist, educator, and the founder of Realm of Her. For 13 years she specialised in researching interpersonal violence, abuse, and mental health, and the conditions that produce them. She has published over 20 academic articles on the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence and was Director of the MSc in Mental Health and Wellbeing at the University of Warwick for five years, where she taught on healthy and toxic organisational cultures and leaders.

She switched her focus to the conditions that protect people from harm and discovered they’re the same conditions that matriarchal cultures have organised themselves around for millennia. From the Inside Out: The Psychology of Matriarchal Community is where these two fields merge and research meets practice.

Start where you are

When we change ourselves, we change each other, and when we change each other, we change the world. These are not separate projects. They are the same movement at different scales, starting from the inside out.

How was the workbook developed?

The eight modules weren't chosen from theory alone. When I began this project, I asked the people in my community what they most wanted to learn. Here's what they said: Inner resilience, radical empathy, conscious communication, conflict in community, and non-hierarchical leadership.

They helped to shape the title, and many of them offered something even more courageous — their own stories, which you'll find running through the workbook pages. They're real accounts from real people doing this work, shared so you know you're not alone.

The rest of the workbook has been guided by the work of the anthropologist, Heide Goettner-Abendroth, the matriarch of matriarchal research. In her comprehensive studies of matriarchal and indigenous cultures around the world, she identified four key domains in which matriarchal systems are organised: social, political, economic, and cultural. The workbook is built around these four core domains, unpacking the psychological and relational skills necessary for them to operate effectively (Figure 1).
